Stack's Bowers 2022 NYINC sale, lot 1126

This specimen was lot 1126 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2022), where it sold for $4,560. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMAN EAST AFRICA. 2 Rupien, 1894. Berlin Mint. Wilhelm II. NGC MS-62. This SCARCE and popular type offers attractive white surfaces and good luster, and presents an overall level of quality that is hardly ever encountered for the issue." This type was struck 1893-94 for German East Africa to the standard of two Indian rupees. After a prolonged struggle, the British managed to conquer the region during World War One and it was partitioned between them and the Belgians by the Treaty of Versailles. The Belgian portion is now Burundi and Rwanda and the British part merged with Zanzibar to form Tanzania.
