Gerdingen (1449-67) mite
This specimen was lot 1522 in Jean Elsen sale 155 (Brussels, June 2023), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,
"GERDINGEN, Johanna van Merwede (1449-1467), Cu mijt, z.j. Imitatie van de Brabantse mijt van Karel de Stoute (G.H. 31-1). Vz/ + KAROLVS DEI GRA BVX Bourgondisch wapenschild. Kz/ + MON-[ETA]- NOA- DE: G Lang kruis met Leuvens wapenschild. Uiterst zeldzaam. Fraai à Zeer Fraai. (city of Gerdingen, Joanna of Merwede, 1449-67, undated copper mite, imitation of a Brabant mite of Charles the Rash. Obverse: Burgundian arms; reverse: long cross with the arms of Leuvens. Extremely rare, Fine - Very Fine.)"
Alhoewel de meeste stukken van Johanna van Merwede in haar eigen naam werden geslagen, bestaan toch enkele imitaties met de naam en titulatuur van Filips de Goede. Ook dit stuk in de naam van Karel de Stoute moet hiertoe gerekend worden. Het is een imitatie van een Brabantse mijt geslagen te Leuven, maar de legende op de keerzijde is van een Vlaamse mijt, waar de G oorspronkelijk voor Gent staat. Deze kon zonder wijzigingen voor Gerdingen overgenomen worden. (Although most pieces by Johanna van Merwede were minted in her own name, there are still a few imitations with the name and title of Philip the Good. This piece in the name of Charles the Rash should also be counted among these. It is an imitation of a Brabant mite minted in Leuven, but the legend on the reverse is of a Flemish mite, where the G originally stood for Ghent. This could be adopted for Gerdingen without any changes.)
Roberts comments, "The mite of Flanders was valued at 1/24 gros or 1/8 of an English penny.... The mite of Brabant was valued at only 1/36 gros, making its 4-mite piece 1/3 of a penny."
