Gelderland 1586 real Dav-8828
This specimen was lot 92 in Schulman sale 347 (Amsterdam, April 2015), where it sold for €8,000 (about US$10,297 with buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "leicesterreaal. 1586. Borstbeeld met lauwerkrans van de graaf van leicester naar rechts ✥ CONCORDIA• RES• PARVÆ• CRESCVNT• GEL•. Kz. pijlenbundel met daar omheen de wapentjes van de zes provinciën MO• ORDIN• PROVIN• FOEDER• BELGIÆ• 1586•. gladde rand. RRRR. Vrijwel prachtig. tezamen met de halve leicesterreaal zouden in totaal 341 exemplaren geslagen zijn. dit is het derde bekende stuk en in september 1952 bij ons gekocht. Van de drie bekende stukken, is dit exemplaar kwalitatief het beste. een zeldzame gelegenheid om dit stuk te kunnen verwerven." Davenport listed this type for 1586 only. The Earl of Leicester was sent by queen Elizabeth of England to assist the Dutch in their struggle for independence from the Spanish. Wikipedia comments, "A champion also of the international Protestant cause, he led the English campaign in support of the Dutch Revolt (1585–1587). His acceptance of the post of governor-general of the United Provinces infuriated Queen Elizabeth. The expedition was a military and political failure, and it ruined Leicester financially." Gelderland was in the heart of the United Provinces and Leicester daalders were struck in the other provinces as well (see Dav-8842).
