This specimen was lot 1015 in Jean Elsen sale 115 (Brussels, December 2012) where it sold for €1500 (about US$2,290 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"NEDERLAND, GELDERLAND, Hertogdom, Karel V (1506-1555), AV gouden zonneschild, 1544, Nijmegen. Droit : Gekroond wapenschild tussen twee vuurijzers. Revers : Leliekruis met in de hoeken tweekoppige adelaars en torens. Zeldzaam. Met op kz.: + DA MIHI VIRTVTE CONTRA HOS TV. Lichte dubbelslag. Ex HSA 1022. Prachtig. (Duchy of Gelderland, Charles V (1506-55), gold couronne d'or of 1544, Nijmegen mint. Obverse: crowned arms between two crown; reverse: floriate cross with two eagles and two towers in the fields. Scarce, lightly double struck, extremely fine.)"

Couronnes d'or were struck again in the Spanish Netherlands about 1615-42 but by then Gelderland had become part of the United Provinces.
