Fukien (1896-1903) 10 cents Y-103
Fukien (Fujian) Province lies on the south east coast of China. The Foochow Mint operated through the Manchu dynasty, and an additional mint was built for struck coinage in 1896. Several other mints have been in operation since that time. The first specimen shown was lot 60136 in Ponterio sale 162 (Hong Kong, August 2011), where it sold for $1,673. The catalog description[1] noted, "CHINA. Fukien. 7.2 Candareens (10 Cents), ND (ca. 1896-1903). 福建官局造光緒元寶七分二釐銀幣。Lightly toned. 輕度包漿。NGC MS-62. Ex: The Frank Robinson Collection." The second specimen was lot 55102 in Stack's Bowers Hong Kong auction (Hong Kong, April 2021), where it sold for $216. The catalog description[2] noted, "CHINA. Fukien. 7.2 Candareens (10 Cents), ND (1896-03). PCGS Genuine--Cleaned, Unc Details Gold Shield. Variety with dots on character side periphery. A sharply struck coin with bright surfaces from the cleaning, though very few hairlines are visible."
