French Indochina 1939 10 cents
This specimen was lot 30464 in Stack's Bowers ANA auction (Chicago, August 2014), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRENCH INDO-CHINA. 10 Cents, 1939. PCGS AU-53. RARE. Date between dots." This type was issued 1939-40 to replace a silver coin issued prior to 1937. The nickel type (KM 21.1) is common, the copper-nickel type (KM 21.2) is scarce. French Indochina was occupied by the Japanese in 1940. French attempts to reoccupy the area after World War Two were challenged by Ho Chi Minh and the Viet Minh, leading to French defeat and withdrawal in 1954. The colony was divided into Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos.
Recorded mintage: 2,237,000 in copper-nickel plus 16,841,000 in nickel.
