French Colonies 1839-A 10 centimes

This specimen was struck in Paris for the French colonies in the Caribbean. The type was struck 1839-44. There is a similar five centimes. The success of this issue was used as a precursor to the large copper issues of Napoleon III in France during the 1850's. This specimen was lot 2151 in Goldberg sale 81 (Los Angeles, September 2014), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "French Colonies. 10 Centimes, 1839-A. Louis Philippe. PCGS graded MS-64 Red & Brown."

Recorded mintage: 300,000, a common date.
