Frankenberg (1445-90) brule
This specimen was lot 1264 in Jean Elsen sale 164 (Brussels, March 2026), where it sold for €800 (about US$1,114 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"FRANKENBERG, Jan van Merode (1445-1490), Cu brûlé. Imitatie van de Luikse brûlé van Jan van Heinsberg. Vz/ + IOH-AS DN-S DE V-RANK Wapenschild van Jan van Heinsberg op een lang kruis. Kz/ MONETA NOVA FACTA IN LNSONEN:N Het Luikse perron. Van de grootste zeldzaamheid. bijna Zeer Fraai. (lordship of Frankenberg, John of Merode, 1445-90, copper brulé, imitation of a Liege brulé of John of Heinsberg. Obverse: arms of Jan van Heinsberg over a long cross; reverse: Liege pillar. Of the highest rarity, about Very Fine.)
De kleine heerlijkheid Frankenberg, genoemd naar een landgoed ten zuiden van Aken, was een leen van het hertogdom Jülich binnen het baljuwschap Schoonvorst. Sedert het begin van de 15e eeuw behoorde het toe aan het huis Merode. - La petite seigneurie de Frankenberg, du nom d'un manoir au sud d'Aix-la-Chapelle, était un fief du duché de Juliers compris dans le baillage de Schoonvorst. Elle appartenait à la maison de Mérode depuis le début du 15e siècle. (The small lordship of Frankenberg, named after an estate south of Aachen, was a fief of the Duchy of Jülich within the bailiwick of Schoonvorst. Since the beginning of the 15th century, it belonged to the House of Merode.)"
Scrutiny of local maps finds no trace of any Falkenberg in the Netherlands. We believe the lordship in question is that of Valkenburg in the province of Limburg, today a tourist town of pop. 16,365 (2021). The term brûlé is more of a nickname than a denomination and referred to a number of different low value copper coins such as sous, deniers, duits and liards. Most were carelessly made, with bad strikes on crude planchets being normal.
