This specimen was lot 1965 in Jean Elsen sale 163 (Brussels, November 2025), where it sold for €725 (about US$838 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"FRANCE, Cinquième République (1959-), AV 50 francs, 1996, Paris. Idéal du football. Écrin et certificat. (France, Fifth Republic, since 1959, gold fifty francs, Paris mint, World Cup of football. Proof with box and certificate.)"
The 1998 World Cup was held in France and the French national team won its first title at that tournament.
Recorded mintage: 10,000 proofs.
Specification: 8.45 g, 0.920 fine gold, 22 mm diameter, edge lettered LIBERTÉ ÉGALITÉ FRATERNITÉ.
