France 1966 5 centimes
The first specimen was lot 23495 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (Newport Beach, CA, January 2021), where it sold for $3,360. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Gold 5 Centimes Piefort, 1966. NGC PROOF-68 Ultra Cameo. Weight: 8.7 g. A sharply struck example with hard mirrored fields and frosted cameo devices. A highly desirable date of the this double tick off-metal strike with a small mintage adding to its appeal. Free of tone, haze or fog. From the Naples Bay Collection." This specimen is a gold piedfort struck for collectors and insiders. The regular issue is a common date of a type struck at the Paris mint 1966-2001. Some of the later dates, such as 1989 and 1999-2001, are only available from FDC sets.
Recorded mintage: 502,519,171 plus 20 struck in gold.
Specification: 2 g, aluminum-bronze, 17 mm diameter, designed by Henri Lagriffoul (1907-81) and Adrien Dieudonné (1912-82).
