This specimen is from a two year type struck 1904-05. It was the second attempt to circulate a coin of this denomination since 1848 but it was not a success as it was too close to the franc in size. It was a redesign of a 1903 issue that had failed. In 1914, this Lindauer design with a hole was introduced, which proved to be workable. This coin is very common in circulated condition but hard to find choice.
Recorded mintage: 8,000,000[1].
Specification: 7 g, nickel, 24 mm diameter, polygonal edge, designed by Auguste Patey (1855-1930).
Catalog reference: F.169/5, KM 866.
