This specimen was lot 21182 in Heritage sale 3008 (New York, January 2010), where it sold for $16,675. The catalog description[1] noted, "Republic Silver Pattern 5 Francs 1898, MS64 NGC, subtle silvery-gray and gold patina, very rare ESSAI for the unadopted 5 Franc denomination. One of the classic rarities of the French Republic series and a most attractive design featuring Liberté sowing the seeds of France's future." This is the original of the famous "Semeuse" design used on the silver half, one and two francs of 1898-1920. No five francs were issued after 1889, so this rare pattern is the only way to obtain a crown-sized coin with this design.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 25 g, 0.900 fine silver, reeded edge.

Catalog reference: KM-Pn99, Mazard 2122.
