France 1714-A ecu
This specimen was lot 1362 in Sincona sale 59 (Zürich, October 2019), where it sold for 250 CHF (about US$303 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"Frankreich, Konigreich, Louis XIV. 1643-1715. Ecu aux trois couronnes 1714 A, Paris. Sehr schön. Kleine Kratzer. (kingdom of France, Louis XIV, 1643-1715, écu of the three crowns of 1714, Paris mint. Very fine, Small scratches.)"
Shown is a écu aux trois couronnes (écu with three crowns) struck at the Rennes mint in the last years of Louis XIV's reign. This is the last type of écu struck during the Sun King's life. The type was struck 1709-15 in substantial numbers. There are also 1/10, 1/4 and half écus struck during this period with this design. This date is somewhat scarce.
Recorded mintage: 167,027, a better date.
