Künker sale 400, lot 465

This specimen was lot 465 in Künker sale 400 (Berlin, February 2024), where it sold for €3,800 (about US$4,930 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANKREICH, KÖNIGREICH, Louis XIV, 1643-1715. 1/2 Louis d'or au soleil 1711, P, Dijon. In US-Plastikholder der NGC mit der Bewertung AU 58 (6774212-003). GOLD. Von großer Seltenheit. Feine Goldtönung, fast vorzüglich. (kingdom of France, Louis XIV, 1643-1715, gold half louis of the sunburst of 1711, Dijon mint. Graded NGC AU58. Extremely rare, fine gold patina, about extremely fine.)"

This type is catalogued as a demi-louis d'or au soleil, struck at various mints 1709-15. Despite some substantial mintages, the type is rare, rarer than the preceding demi-louis d'or aux insignes of 1701-09. Its face value was 10 livres.

Recorded mintage: 5,947[2].

Specification: 4.07 g, 0.917 fine gold, 19-21 mm diameter, reeded edge, designed by Joseph Roëttiers.
