France 1700-N 1/4 ecu
This specimen was lot 3448 in Sincona sale 51 (Zürich, October 2018), where it did not sell. The catalog description[2] noted,
"Frankreich, Louis XIV. 1643-1715. 1/4 Ecu aux palmes 1700 N, Montpellier. Réformation. Von grösster Seltenheit. Sehr schön. (kingdom of France, Louis XIV, 1643-1715, quarter écu of the palms, Montpellier mint, reformed. Of the highest rarity, Very fine.)"
The specimen shown is a quart d'écu aux palmes struck at the Montpellier mint 1693-1700. It succeeded the quart d'écu aux 8 L struck 1690-93 and was superseded by the quart d'écu aux insignes struck 1701-03. It is more common than either type but this is a rare date, being noted as "reported, not confirmed"[1].
