Sincona sale 87, lot 2354

This specimen was lot 2354 in Sincona sale 87 (Zürich, October 2023), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANKREICH Königreich und Republik, Louis XIV. 1643-1715. Louis d'or aux quatre L 1697 P, Dijon. Zeitgenössische Fälschung überprägt auf: Italien, Savoyen. Vittorio Amadeus II. unter Vormundschaft seiner Mutter, 1675-1680. Doppio 1678, Torino. Gadoury vgl. 252. MIR 835 d (R6). Von grosser Seltenheit und numismatischer Bedeutung, Fast vorzüglich (kingdom of France, Louis XIV, 1643-1715, gold louis of the four "L's" of 1697, Dijon mint, contemporary counterfeit struck over a Savoy doppia of 1678. Of high rarity and numismatic importance. About extremely fine."

This counterfeit would normally be of little interest except that it was made from a very rare gold doppia of Savoy, which was so close in weight to the genuine louis d'or that it can have yielded little profit to the maker. Altho the die work is generally above average, note the botched date, "1967". This example was offered again as lot 1181 in Sincona sale 90 (Zürich, May 2024), where it sold for 2,500 CHF (about US$3,304 including buyer's fees).

Recorded mintage: 7,932, all rf.

Specification: 6.75 g, 0.917 fine gold, this specimen 6.67 g. The host coin was 6.66 g, 0.986 fine gold.
