France 1689 30 sols
This specimen was lot 74694 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2025), where it sold for $145. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. 1/2 Ecu (30 Sols), 1689. Strasbourg Mint. Louis XIV. PCGS Genuine--Scratch, EF Details. From the Richard August Collection." This type was struck at Strasbourg 1682-89 for circulation there and in Alsace. It was restruck into 35 sols 1694-1701 (Dr/2 № 509). The obverse legend, "MONETA NOVA ARGENTINENSIS," means "new silver coin;" the reverse legend, "GLORIA IN EXCELSIS DEO," is the familiar "Glory to God in the highest."
