France 1675-D 4 sols
This specimen was part of lot 29052 in Heritage sale 3064 (Chicago, April 2018), which sold for $360. The catalog description[2] noted, "Louis XIV. Trio of High Grade 4 Sol Pieces, ...2) 1675-D Unc., Lyon mint. Considerable luster, moderately-well struck. ...From the Doug Robins Collection of Canadian Tokens." This quatre sols des Traitants is a rather unusual product of the Vimy mint (not Lyon, despite the "D" mintmark"). It was accompanied by a two sols (KM 246). Its production was farmed out to contractors who produced large quantities, likely more than was reported to the government. This is one of the few French coins of the 1662-1690 period that can be called common.
