Jean Elsen sale 141, lot 1254

This specimen was lot 1254 in Jean Elsen sale 141 (Brussels, June 2019), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Royaume, Louis XIV (1643-1715), AR écu du Béarn au buste juvénile, 1664, Pau. D/ B. à d., les cheveux longs, l., dr. et cuir. R/ Ecu couronné, parti France et Navarre-Béarn. Rare Fin de plaque et défaut de flan au revers. Très Beau. (kingdom of France, Louis XIV, 1643-1715, silver écu of Béarn of the juvenile bust of 1664, Pau mint. Obverse: laureate, draped and armored bust right with long hair; reverse: crowned arms of France, Navarre and Béarn. Rare, planchet defect on reverse, Very Fine.)"

This type was struck 1663-80 at the Pau mint. The crowned arms of France impaled with Navarre and Béarn mark this as a separate and rare type.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.45 g, 0.917 fine silver, 38-41 mm diameter, plain edge, engraved by J. Warin, this specimen 26,60 g.
