France 1654-A liard

from Sincona sale 11, lot 1308

This specimen was lot 1308 in Sincona sale 11 (Zürich, May 2013), where it sold for 850 CHF (about US$1,052 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANKREICH Louis XIV. 1643-1715. Liard 1654, Paris. Erster Typ. Selten. Justiert. Vorzüglich. (France, Louis XIV, 1643-1715, liard of 1654, Paris mint, first type. Rare, extremely fine.)"

This rare type is listed only for 1654-A (Corbeil, not Paris) and 1656-K. The main production run was of the liard de France au buste adolescent, of which several hundred million were made 1655-58.

Recorded mintage: 4,075.

Specification: copper, this specimen 3.80 g.
