SB125-31320r.jpg

This specimen was lot 31320 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2025), where it sold for $1,440. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Ecu d'Or, 1640-&. Aix-en-Provence Mint. Louis XIII. NGC MS-63. Emanating from a SCARCER mint, this Choice hammered issue presents some alluring golden-orange hues and a good deal of remaining brilliance." This type was struck at numerous mints 1611-43, i.e., Louis' entire reign. The SCWC lists this mint for 1635-42 but other dates may exist. While the Paris mint was experimenting with milled coinage, the product of the provincial mints was hammered.
