France 1636 double lorrain KM-87
This specimen was lot 74666 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2025), where it sold for $125. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Double Lorrain, 1636. Stenay Mint. Louis XIII. PCGS AU-55. From the Richard August Collection." Stenay is today a village in the department of the Meuse. In the seventeenth century, the duke of Lorraine established a mint there to strike imitations of the double tournois issued by Louis XIII. He was not the only lord to do this. He later changed the design to read "DOVBLE LORRAIN" to evade charges of counterfeiting and considerable quantities were made. Double lorrains have Dr/4 nos. 231-246, struck without mintmark 1635-43. This variety was struck 1636-37 and is common.
Recorded mintage: 1,027,888 all varieties[2], including Dr/4 № 158 (double tournois, grosse tête juvénile a grande fraise).
Specification: copper, 1.8-3.7 g, 18-20 mm diameter, plain edge.
Catalog reference: Dr/4 № 243, KM-87; Gad-13.
