France 1632-H double tournois
This specimen was lot 74672 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2025), where it sold for $125. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Double Tournois, 1632-H. La Rochelle Mint. Louis XIII. PCGS AU-53. From the Richard August Collection." This type was struck at La Rochelle 1631-32 and is fairly common. Double tournois were struck at many mints in dozens of varieties thru the reigns of Henry IV, Louis XIII and Louis XIV. It was the practice at the time to farm out the copper coinage to private contractors. Droulers[2] estimates 600 million double tournois were struck.
Recorded mintage: 604,012[2].
Specification: 3.13 g, copper, 20 mm diameter, plain edge.
