Goldberg NY International sale 58, lot 1050

This specimen was lot 1050 in Goldberg's NY International sale 58 (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $252. The catalog description[1] noted, "France. Charles X, Cardinal De Bourbon (1589-1590). Silver ¼ Ecu, 1594. Mintmark "99", Dinan. Cross. Rev. Crowned shield. Posthumous issue in the name of Henry III. Toned. In PCGS holder graded XF 45." The Dinan mint operated 1594-98 using equipment taken from the Rennes mint (mintmark "9"). It struck a fairly substantial number of quarter écus and a few eighth écus for the pretender Charles X durings its brief existence. The final mintmaster, Etienne Delabroy, was executed for counterfeiting in 1598.
