France 1580-B ecu d'or
This specimen was lot 1082 in Jean Elsen sale 145 (Brussels, September 2020), where it sold for €950 (about US$1,354 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"FRANCE, Royaume, Henri III (1574-1589), AV écu d'or au soleil, 1580B, Rouen. D/ Ecu de France couronné, sous un soleil. La légende débutant en bas. R/ Croix fleurdelisée, un quadrilobe en coeur. Très Beau. (kingdom of France, Henry III, 1574-89, gold écu of the sunburst of 1580, Rouen mint. Obverse: crowned arms of France under a sunburst with the legend starting at the bottom; reverse: floriate cross, quadrilobe at the center. Very Fine.)"
This coin is called the écu d'or au soleil in Duplessy[2] with a face value of fifty sols tournois and is noted with many variations in obverse and reverse legends.
