This specimen was lot 1585 in Stephen Album sale 38 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2020), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE: Charles IX, 1560-1574, AR testone, 1573-F, Angers Mint issue, youth head left with CAROLVS IX D G FRANCOR REX around // crowned shield, with crowned C's at sides, +SIT NOMEN DNI BENEDIC MDLXXIII around, a few areas of weakness and minor scratches on bust, but quite attractive, VF." This type was struck 1561-74 and was the most common teston of the reign. The example in Duplessy shows an obverse legend of "CAROLVS·VIII·" whereas this one shows "CAROLVS·IX·".

Specification: 9.59 g, 0.899 fine silver, this specimen 9.44 g.

Recorded mintage: est. 81,727, a somewhat scarce date.
