France 1555-K henri d'or

Sincona sale 101, lot 2629

This specimen was lot 2629 in Sincona Auction 101 (Zürich, October 2025), where it sold for 3,250 CHF (about US$4,899 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANKREICH Königreich und Republik, Henri II. 1547-1559. Henri d'or 1555 K, Bordeaux. NGC AU55."

This is a henri d'or of the second type with four fleurs-de-lys on the reverse (Sb 4982), the first type (Sb 4976) has two lilies and two crescents. There are four known per Sombart, tied with 1552-K as the most common date. This variety was struck at Poitiers (mintmark G), La Rochelle (H), Bordeaux (K) and Bayonne (L) 1550-61. It had a face value of fifty sols tournois, the same as the écu d'or. The denomination was continued after his death in 1559 by his teenage sons, Francis II and Charles IX.
