France (1530-37)-G double tournois
This specimen was lot 1495 in Jean Elsen sale 151 (Brussels, June 2022), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,
"FRANCE, Royaume, François Ier (1515-1547), Cu double tournois du Dauphiné, s.d., Romans. Premier type. D/ Dauphin sous deux lis, dans un trilobe. R/ Croix dans un quadrilobe. Différent: G (Pierre Guérin, 1530-1537). Très Beau. (kingdom of France, Francis I, 1515-47, undated copper double tournois of Dauphiny, Romans mint, first type. Obverse: dolphin below two lilies in a trilobe; reverse: cross in a quadrilobe. Very Fine.)"
The auctioneers list this type as copper, which it mostly was, but there was still 11% silver in the mix. The second period of Francis's coinage begins in 1540, with the introduction of letter mintmarks.
