from Jean Elsen sale 132, lot 727

This specimen was lot 727 in Jean Elsen sale 132 (Brussels, March 2017), where it sold for €600 (about US$760 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Royaume, Charles VIII (1483-1498), AV écu d'or au soleil, 2e émission (juillet 1494), Type spécial à Perpignan. D/ (rose initiale) CAROLVS FRANCO-RVM DEI GRACI RX Ecu de France couronné sous un soleil. Couronnelle à l'exergue, coupant la légende. R/ (lis initial) SIT NOMEN DOMINI BENEDICTVM REX Croix fleurdelisée avec lettre P en coeur. Rare. Très Beau. (kingdom of France, Charles VIII (1483-98), gold écu d'or au soleil, second issue (July 1494), special type of Perpignan. Obverse: crowned arms below sunburst; reverse: floriate cross with "P" in the center. Rare, very fine.)"

This écu d'or au soleil was issued for Charles VIII from numerous mints. Most of the mints placed a quadrilobe at the center of the cross but Perpignan used a "P". Two types exist; the first emission lacked the "REX" at the end of the reverse legend. Duplessy notes that the face value was 36 sols, 3 deniers tournois. In 1540, the use of letters as mintmarks was regularized and Perpignan was assigned the "Q", which letter was used until the 1830's.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.49 g, .963 fine gold, this specimen 3,32 g.
