Sincona sale 38, lot 1282

This specimen was lot 1282 in Sincona sale 38 (Zürich, May 2017), where it sold for 1,600 CHF (about US$1,919 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Königreich, Charles VII. 1422-1461 1/2 Ecu dor à la couronne o. J. (4. Emission, 26.5.1447). Paris. Selten. Sehr schön. (kingdom of France, Charles VII, 1422-61, undated demi-écu d'or à la couronne, fourth emission, Rare, Very fine.)"

This coin was issued before the modern system of mintmarks was introduced by Francis I in 1540. Prior to that date, mints used various secret marks to identify and date their product. This otherwise undated and unmintmarked coin is thereby noted as being produced by the Paris mint (later mintmark "A") as part of the fourth emission of May 1447. Duplessy notes this coin had a face value of 13 sols and 9 deniers tournois at the time of issue.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 1.736 g, .989 fine gold, this specimen 1.71 g.

Catalog reference: Duplessy 513C, Fr-308.
