Künker sale 294, lot 3022

This specimen was lot 3022 in Künker sale 294 (Osnabrück, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €1,400 (about US$1,887 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANKREICH, KÖNIGREICH, Henri VI d'Angleterre, 1422-1453. Salut d'or o. J. (1423), 2. Emission, Paris. GOLD. Fast vorzüglich. (kingdom of France, Henry VI of England, 1422-53, undated salut d'or, second emission, Paris mint. About extremely fine.)"

This coin was issued before the modern system of mintmarks was introduced by Francis I in 1540. Prior to that date, mints used various secret marks to identify and date their product. This undated coin shows a dot under the R of HENRICVS and is thereby noted as being produced by the Paris mint (later mintmark "A") sometime around 1423. Paris was occupied by the English 1422-36. Duplessy notes that the contemporary face value was 22 sols, 6 deniers tournois and lists thirteen mints.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.49 g, 1.000 fine gold, this specimen 3.46 g.

Catalog reference: Fr-301; Dupl-443a; Ciani-598.
