Stack's Bowers September 2024 Collector's Choice sale, lot 74343

This specimen was lot 74343 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2024), where it sold for $145. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Gros a la Couronne, ND (ca. 1340). Philip VI. NGC MS-61. The 4th emission; this variety with the single large annulet within the chatel. Virtually as-struck, though with areas of weakness particularly in the perimeter areas (both lis and legends) as is not unusual for the type. A scarce variety." The gros of Philip VI come in many types and names, each referring to a different manipulation of the coinage. Duplessy notes the following:

  • Dupl-260: September 1329, gros parisis, 5.09 g, 0.958 fine silver, 15 deniers tournois;
  • Dupl-261: September 1329, gros tournois, 4.07 g, 0.958 fine silver, 12 deniers tournois;
  • Dupl-262: January 1337, gros à la couronne, 1st emission, 2.54 g, 0.851 fine silver, 10 deniers tournois;
  • Dupl-262A: October 1338, gros à la couronne, 2nd emission, 2.54 g, 0.639 fine silver, 10 deniers tournois;
  • Dupl-262B: January 1340, gros à la couronne, 3rd emission, 2.33 g, 0.559 fine silver, 10 deniers tournois;
  • Dupl-262C: April 1340, gros à la couronne, 4th emission, 2.26 g, 0.479 fine silver, 10 deniers tournois, shown here;
  • Dupl-263: January 1341, gros à la fleur de lis, 1st emission, 2.91 g, 0.479 fine silver, 15 deniers tournois;
  • Dupl-263A: February 1341, gros à la fleur de lis, 2nd emission, 2.54 g, 0.479 fine silver, 15 deniers tournois;
  • Dupl-263B: June 1342, gros à la fleur de lis, 3rd emission, 2.03 g, 0.479 fine silver, 15 deniers tournois;
  • Dupl-263C: same as Dupl-263B;
  • Dupl-264: August 1343, gros tournois, 4.07 g, 0.958 fine silver, 45 deniers tournois, very rare;
  • Dupl-265: September 1348 to January 1349, gros tournois, 3.39 g, 0.479 fine silver, 15 deniers tournois;
