This specimen was lot 33881 in Heritage sale 3106 (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $1,860. The catalog description[1] noted, "Italy: Florence. Republic (1115-1532) gold Florin ND (1436) MS61 NGC, Simone Canigiani as mintmaster. S. IOHA-NNES. B. St. John the Baptist nimbate and mantled, standing facing, holding cross tipped staff, coral branch above right / + FLOR ENITA Florentine lily. Wholly original surfaces with some dark crevices occupy this seldom-seen issue. The sole piece recorded by NGC. Ex. CNG Triton XXV (January 2022, Lot 1174)." The gold florin was intended to compete with the Venetian ducat but is today much scarcer.
