Sincona sale 89, lot 654

This specimen was lot 654 in Sincona sale 89 (Zürich, May 2024), where it sold for 3,000 CHF (about US$3,964 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"ITALIEN Florenz, Repubblica, 1189-1532. Fiorino d'oro o. J. (1422-1427), Firenze. Mit dem Münzmeisterzeichen "Geflügelter Helm" (Antonio di Niccolo da Rabatta). Selten, besonders in dieser Erhaltung. Vorzüglich. Winziger Kratzer auf dem Avers. Exemplar der Auktion Hess Divo 287, Zürich, Mai 2001, Los 703. (Italy, republic of Florence, 1189-1532, undated gold florin, circa 1422-27, Florence mint, "flying helmet" mintmark of Antonio di Niccolo da Rabatta. Rare, especially in this condition, Extremely fine, Tiny scratch on obverse.)"

Altho the first florin was issued a generation before the first ducat, the issues of Venice gradually overwhelmed those of Florence to where few florins survive today. This type was struck for nearly two centuries without change; later issues bear the arms of the mintmaster and can be dated to the years of his tenure.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.5 g, 0.986 fine gold, this specimen 3.54 g.

Catalog reference: MIR 21/12. Fr-276.
