Flanders (1416-18) noble Fr-173
This specimen was lot 919 in Jean Elsen sale 121 (Brussels, June 2014), where it sold for €3,400 (about US$5,446 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"VLAANDEREN, Graafschap, Jan zonder Vrees (1405-1419), AV gouden nobel, 1416-1418, Gent. 2e uitgifte. Droit: De graaf, met zwaard en Bourgondisch-Vlaams wapen, in een schip. Revers: Gebloemd kruis in een achtpas met in het hart I en in de hoeken vier gekroonde leeuwtjes. Zeer Zeldzaam. goede Zeer Fraai. (county of Flanders, John the Fearless (1405-1419), gold noble without date (1416-18), Ghent mint, second type. Obverse: the count, bearing sword and shield, stands in a ship. Reverse: floriate cross with crowned lions between the arms. Very rare, good very fine.)"
This coin was issued by the Burgundian duke for Flanders, the wealthiest part of his domain. The death of his grandson, Charles the Rash, in 1477, allowed the county to pass to the Spanish Hapsburgs.
