Sincona sale 76, lot 1016

This specimen was lot 1016 in Sincona sale 76 (Zürich, May 2022), where it sold for 22,000 CHF (about US$26,704 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BELGIUM | Flandern, Grafschaft. Louis de Male, 1346-1384. Heaume d'or o. J. Gent. Sehr selten. Gutes vorzüglich. NGC AU55. Überdurchschnittlich gut ausgeprägt. (county of Flanders, Louis de Male, 1346-84, undated gold helmet, Ghent mint. Very rare, Good extremely fine, Extraordinarily well struck.)"

Louis II de Male was count of Flanders when that province was one of the richest regions of Europe. Nominally part of France, Louis refused to pay homage to either the king of France or the king of England, steering a neutral course during the Hundred Years War. It was then that this coin was struck. Later, he married his daughter to Philip, duke of Burgundy, uniting the two houses against the authority of the king of France. The count also struck imitation chaise d'or, mouton d'or, lion d'or and francs à cheval.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: gold, this specimen 6.86 g.

Catalog reference: Delmonte 462 (R2). Fr-159.
