Monterey Park, from a 1939 street map

This specimen was lot 10016 in Stack's Bowers August 2019 ANA - Session 4 - U.S. Currency (Chicago, August 2019), where it sold for $9,000. The catalog description[1] noted, "Excessively Rare Monterrey Park, Finest of Two Known, Monterey Park, California. $10 1929 Ty. 1. Fr. 1801-1. The First NB. Charter #12061. PMG Very Fine 20. This excessively rare Los Angeles County bank had only one issuing institution. The bank opened in 1921 and decided to issue just 1929 series notes, in both $5 and $10 denominations. It issued a mere $25,110, of that, just 202 sheets were of the $10 denomination. This is just one of two notes know[n], and the finest by a slim margin. It last sold for $11,000 in a 2004 public auction. One of the greatest California small to be offered in many years."
