Stack's Bowers March 2020 Collectors Choice Auction, lot 90143

small size $5

This specimen was lot 90143 in Stack's Bowers December 2019 Collectors Choice Auction - U.S. Currency (Costa Mesa, CA, December 2019), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "Rare Loma Linda, CA. 1929 $5 Uncut Sheet, Uncut Sheet of (6) Loma Linda, California. $5 1929 Ty. 2. Fr. 1800-2. The First NB. Charter #13332. PMG About Uncirculated 55 EPQ. A very welcomed new addition to the census for this scarce San Bernardino County bank. While 13 notes are known according to Track & Price, auction appearances are seldom. Just three smalls have sold in the last 20 years, with only one of those being a PMG Very Fine 30 type 2 $5, which just sold for $3100 in a September 2019 auction. This sheet, graded PMG 55 EPQ shows with excellent paper originality and eye appeal. With VF single notes selling for $3,000 we can safely expect this sheet to reach or even exceed our estimate."

Heritage auction 354, lot 17793
H354-17793r.jpg

This specimen was lot 17793 in Heritage auction 354 (the Horwedel sale, Long Beach, CA, September 2004), where it sold for $2,990. The catalog description[1] noted, "Loma Linda, CA - $10 1929 Ty. 1 The First NB Ch. # 13332, The vast majority of the notes listed in the census from this San Bernardino County bank appear to be institutionally held, which is why our records indicate just two previous offerings of any kind from here, one in the Krakover collection sale of 1990, and the second in the Colver sale of 1999, where we sold two pieces, this example, which realized $2090 against a pre-sale estimate of $500-900, and a second piece, which, despite some tape repaired splits, fetched $1320. With no other offerings since 1999, and with little realistic chance of collectors finding other specimens on the market, this piece, which is heavily circulated on the right side but quite intact and otherwise problem free, will have to do the trick. Very Good. Ex-Charles Colver collection sale, lot 1831."

Heritage auction 3574, lot 20323
H3574-20323r.jpg

This specimen was lot 20323 in Heritage auction 3574 (Long Beach, CA, September 2019), where it sold for $3,600. The catalog description[1] noted,

"Loma Linda Serial Number 1 $20, Loma Linda, CA - $20 1929 Ty. 1 The First NB Ch. # 13332 PMG Very Fine 20. Another great offering from this scarce bank that is the only serial number 1 example reported from here. Last on the auction block in 2006, it was either carried as souvenir by a proud bank employee or was rescued from the channels of commerce as it has seen some circulation but retains solid paper for the grade. Another wonderful note from this large California collection that we are offering this evening. From the Norris Turner Collection."
