Heritage auction 354, lot 17778
H354-17778r.jpg

This specimen was lot 17778 in Heritage auction 354 (the Horwedel sale, Long Beach, CA, September 2004), where it sold for $5,405. The catalog description[1] noted, "Imperial, CA - $5 1882 Brown Back Fr. 477 The First NB Ch. # (P)6027, A nice $5 Brown Back from the only issuer in Imperial. Although a handful of notes from here are listed in the census, our records show only three offerings, the last two of the same note from the Colver collection. That piece, also a $5 Brown Back, realized $4620 back in 1999, although it was damaged and extensively repaired. The Horwedel example is a nice evenly circulated and problem free Fine-Very Fine example with sharp pen signatures. In a market that values rarity, quality and type, it should see bidding. Obtained from Lyn Knight's February, 1995 CPMX sale, lot 1012."
