Heritage auction 354, lot 17633

This specimen was lot 17633 in Heritage auction 354 (the Horwedel sale, Long Beach, CA, September 2004), where it sold for $32,200. The catalog description[1] noted, "Unique for the Bank & Town-First Ever Public Offering, Burbank, CA - $20 1902 Plain Back Fr. 654 The First NB Ch. # (P)10099. One of the true blockbuster notes in the Horwedel collection, with this example unique to the town as well as the bank. Burbank was one of just a handful of southern California locations where Charley Colver, try as he might for over half a century, could not ever obtain even one example. Lowell bought this piece privately some years ago, paying what was at the time a totally exorbitant amount, but tonight his judgment will certainly be vindicated, as this opportunity to obtain the only known example from here may well be a once in a lifetime chance. Bright Fine-Very Fine, impossible to really estimate as this unique item simply cannot be duplicated at any price."
