This specimen was lot 23784 in Heritage sale 3024 (Chicago, April 2013), where it sold for $2,820. The catalog description[1] noted, "Republic gold 200 Markkaa 1926-S, MS64 NGC, virtually flawless with glowing mint brilliance, very rare type in superb quality." Finland obtained her independence from Russia in 1917-18 but still struggled financially. This gold two hundred markkaa is slightly larger than the old tsarist twenty markkaa. This and an accompanying one hundred markkaa (KM 28) are the only circulating gold issues of the republic. Most must have been melted as the coin is today rare.
Recorded mintage: 50,000.
Specification: 8.42 g, 0.900 fine gold, 22.5 mm diameter.
Catalog reference: KM-29.
