This specimen was lot 30138 in Heritage sale 3042 (Long Beach, September 2015), where it sold for $3,995. The catalog description[1] noted, "Meiji gold 5 Yen Year 3 (1870) MS65 NGC, Osaka mint, KM-Y11. Drenched in effulgent luster, with few marks as the grade suggests and a strong strike that completes the design. A vastly popular one-year type, with 12 graded at the MS65 level by NGC, and 13 graded finer."
m. 273,536 for 1870-71. rare type. 8.33 g, .900 fine gold, 23.84 mm diameter. diameter reduced to 21.82 mm in 1872.
