This specimen was at Ottawa for the Fiji Islands 1990-99. Sterling coinage was issued for the islands starting in 1934. World War Two issues were extensively saved by military personnel stationed there and those are the dates most commonly seen today. Decimal conversion occurred in 1967-69, the same time as Britain. Fiji left the British Commonwealth in 1987 but rejoined in 1997. Since then, conflict between indigenous Fijians and descendants of Indian indentured laborers has been constant and occasionally violent.

Recorded mintage: 8,500,000.

Specification: copper-plated zinc, 1.58 g, 17.5 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM 49a.
