Steve Album sale 51, lot 3170

This specimen was lot 3170 in Steve Album Auction 51 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2025), where it sold for $120. The catalog description[1] noted, "FERRARA: Alfonso II d'Este, 1559-1597, AE sesino, ND, bust left with ALFONSVS II DVX around // crowned spread eagle with head left and FER - RARIAE - E C around, plain edge, PCGS graded EF45, R (MIR)." Numista states one scudo was worth 40 sesini or 240 denari. Numista says this is the first bust of the duke, likely used in the first half of his reign. Alfonso II d'Este (1533-97) died without heirs, whereupon the pope seized Ferrara and incorporated it into the Papal States.
