Farmers and Merchants National Bank of Redondo, California
This specimen was lot 18043 in Heritage auction 354 (the Horwedel sale, Long Beach, CA, September 2004), where it sold for $7,475. The catalog description[1] noted, "Redondo, CA - $5 1902 Plain Back Fr. 599 The Farmers & Merchants NB Ch. # (P)7895. One of the truly great notes in the Horwedel collection. Of the four notes known from this large only bank, one is impounded in a museum collection, one last appeared nearly fifty years ago in a 1956 auction, one is the Colver collection's Red Seal, which sold for over $12,000 five years ago, and the other is here. This is a lovely note with bright white paper, vivid inks, and two color signatures. It's certain to please its fortunate new owner, and, once it's gone, it may be many years before the next one comes around. Very Fine-Extremely Fine."
