Stack's Bowers February 2024 Collector's Choice sale, lot 74434
SB224-74434r.jpg

This specimen was lot 74434 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2024), where it sold for $2,160. The catalog description[1] noted, "FALKLAND ISLANDS. 5 Pounds, 1992. Elizabeth II. NGC PROOF-69 Ultra Cameo. From a mintage of a mere 100 pieces. Tied with one other as finest certified by NGC." The Falkland Islands, off the coast of Argentina in the south Atlantic Ocean, last made the news in 1982, when Argentina attempted to conquer the islands but were ousted by Her Majesty's Armed Forces. The islands remain a British dependency. This NCLT was struck in copper-nickel, silver and gold. Only 3,400 people live in the Falklands so it seems unlikely that this coin circulated there.

Recorded mintage: unknown in copper-nickel plus 5,000 in sterling silver and 100 in gold.

Specification: KM 36: 28.28 g, copper-nickel, 38.61 mm diameter; KM 36a: 28.28 g, 0.925 fine silver, KM 36b: 39.94 g, 0.917 fine gold, 1.1775 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: KM-36b shown here.
