England (1537-42) crown Fr-171
This specimen was lot 51010 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Pittsburgh, PA, August 2023), where it sold for $5,040. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. Gold Crown of the Double Rose, ND (1537-42). London Mint; mm: Arrow. Henry VIII. PCGS MS-61. Second coinage. Weight: Obverse: Crowned double rose; crowned Һ-R across field; Reverse: Crowned coat-of-arms; crowned Һ-R across field. Undoubtedly one of the finest of the type that one is likely to encounter, this wholesome Mint State survivor presents a great deal of original brilliance and a sharp strike, all while a vibrant yellow hue dominates each side." The gold crown had a face value of five shillings. The initials, originally "H-K" for Henry and Katherine, changed as Henry ran thru his six wives.
