England (1473) 1/2 angel Fr-140
This specimen was lot 41 in Sincona sale 75 (Zürich, May 2022), where it sold for 12,000 CHF (about US$14,566 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "Grossbritannien | Königreich. Edward IV. Second Reign, 1471-1483. 1/2 Angel n. d. (1473), Tower Mint. Mintmark Cross pattée on annulet. Selten. NGC MS65. Prachtexemplar. (Rare, Cabinet piece.)" The angel was one-third of a pound or six shillings eight pence. This half angel would be three shillings fourpence. The denomination was introduced in the reign of Edward IV to replace the gold noble and was struck until the reign of Charles I. The cross pattée mitmark was used 1473-77 and the annulet mintmark 1472-73; the auctioneers have dated this example to 1473 based on the cross being stamped over the annulet.
