England (1080-83) penny S-1255
This specimen was lot 856 in Jean Elsen sale 163 (Brussels, November 2025), where it sold for €4,600 (about US$5,313 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"ANGLETERRE, Guillaume le Conquérant (1066-1087), AR penny, vers 1080-1083, Chester (ou Leicester). Sword type. Monétaire Liaffing. D/ + PILLEM REX N B. couronné de f., ten. une épée sur l'épaule. R/ + LIΛFFING ON LEIC Croix cantonnée de quatre trèfles. Semble unique et inédit. (kingdom of England, William the Conqueror, 1066-87, silver penny, circa, 1080-1083, Chester or Leicester mints, sword type, Liaffing moneyer. Obverse: the crowned king facing, holding a sword on his shoulder; reverse: cross cantonned with four trefoils. Seems to be unique and unpublished, Very Fine - Extremely Fine.)
