from Sedwick Treasure Auction 21, lot 1386

This specimen was lot 1386 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 21 (Winter Park, FL, May 2017), where it sold for $2,585. The catalog description[1] noted, "El Salvador, 2 reales, volcano countermark (Type III, 1839) on a Lima, Peru, 2 reales, 1828JM, rare, ex-Richard Stuart. Full countermark with clear date below mountain, host coin bold VF with nice toning, crude rims, test-scrape to left of Liberty. Pedigreed to the Richard Stuart collection." The SCWC notes that this countermark was applied in 1840 to separate good silver coins from debased (Bolivian issues were a particular nuisance). This one is scarce, the rest (half, one and eight reales) are rare.
